The Mediterranean and the Mediterranean World: Braudel’s Masterpiece, 70 years On – Does It Still Matter and Why?

In 1946, French historian Fernand Braudel published the work that would define Mediterranean history (as well as many other histories). This lecture will reflect critically on the impact of his work in recent years, as well as its relevance to the ever-changing Mediterranean world and beyond. Finally it will discuss some challenges to the book’s main categories of analysis.
